🦄 Sonic Spotlight

Every week, we’ll shine the spotlight on an audio creator or event our readers should hear from. This week’s spotlight is on: Domino Sound Fest, a day-to-night Pride sound festival platforming queer artists. 

The Domino Sound Fest will feature podcast, music, poetry, comedy, and art in sound. The festival is hosted by Domino Sound, a queer, woman-owned production studio, established by artists Kenya Denise and Alex di Palma in 2018. 

  • Essentials: June 9, 2023 in High Line Nine Galleries in New York City. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased here. 

  • Program: The line-up is designed to platform and celebrate the queer sound art community. While it’s hard to capture the diversity of the program here, some creators I love include the poet Jenny Zhang, audio artist JT Green, and comedian Georgia-Rae Lyken. 

  • Connect: Follow their Instagram to stay updated on all info regarding the event.

⏩ Memory Vale and Passing the Mic

Gavin Gaddis, media critic and podcast producer, wrote an evergreen piece on what the podcast Welcome to Night Vale can teach podcasting.  

We’re revisiting the nostalgia and lessons from that today.

  • The Creators, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, started the podcast back in October 2013. 

  • But, what is a Night Vale? Welcome to Night Vale is an audio fiction podcast that has been consistently releasing episodes twice-monthly for 10+ years.  Each half-hour episode is presented as a community radio show hosted by Cecil Palmer, a resident of the mysterious town of Night Vale. 

    • Be unafraid if you’re looking to start diving into this world. The creators have you covered with a starter’s guide. 

  • The five lessons Gavin shares for all podcasters to take away from the early days of this podcast are: 

    • Keep it simple. 

    • Know your show (and present it accordingly.)

    • Diversify your income stream.

    • Life others up with your work.

    • Be fearless when trying new things.

  • Rococo Punch, the independent podcast studio behind The Turning, merged with audiobook and podcast company Audily. 
  • ICYMI: Actor Joshua Malina, of Scandal fame, joined the podcast Unorthodox as the host.

🌼 Sound in Poetry

Every other week or so, we’ll be sharing poetry on sounds to ease you into your weekends.

Today’s poem is: The Sound of the Sea by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The sea awoke at midnight from its sleep,

And round the pebbly beaches far and wide

I heard the first wave of the rising tide

Rush onward with uninterrupted sweep;

A voice out of the silence of the deep,

A sound mysteriously multiplied

As of a cataract from the mountain’s side,

Or roar of winds upon a wooded steep.

So comes to us at times, from the unknown

And inaccessible solitudes of being,

The rushing of the sea-tides of the soul;

And inspirations, that we deem our own,

Are some divine foreshadowing and foreseeing

Of things beyond our reason or control.
