🔎 Celebrity Podcasts and Essential Discords

On Sounds Profitable, Tom Webster dove into what the failures of certain celebrity podcasts indicate about “putting famous people behind the mic.”
This article from Tom comes after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have come into the spotlight after their exclusive podcast deal with Spotify ended.
(Excuse the shameless self-promo: listen to the complete coverage on our Audio Currents podcast.)
Tom admits that it’s tempting to see the end of this deal, and of Archetypes with Meghan, as a failure of the genre that is celebrity podcasts. However, he posits that this is a “content innovation problem.”
As he puts it: “there is no evidence that Meghan Markle is good at interviewing.”
He shares that he is not in the “celebrities are ruining podcasting” camp. Instead, he says that their celebrity and familiarity can serve as a foundation to take more risks, as opposed to a stale talk show format.
Tom’s personal experiences with media remind us of the vast potential for expansion and innovation within podcasting.
This is just a summary. Read the complete article here, and let Tom know you love it.
Related: On her weekly newsletter Soundbite, Ashley Carman shares what happened to Prince Harry’s podcast ideas. Spoiler alert: this is also a commentary on the potential future and fate of celebrity podcasts.
In my interview with him, Davy Gardner summarized the importance of community in the growth of independent creators: “I think that the best resource that independent producers have is each other.”
In this vein, I am sharing three Discord communities for independent creators below.
But first, a quick shoutout: Thank you to Tal Minear for sharing the Discord invites for these on their newsletter Podplane.
Podcast: Rebound Revolutionis a new podcast from edit audio. Hosted by Dr. Money McEachern, the show is a “not-so-basketball basketball” podcast. It discusses on and off the basketball court happenings, from a Black and queer lens.
Podcast: The Pleasure Palateis a new podcast produced by Rebecca Katz. The food podcast spotlights stories about women who are “reclaiming pleasure in the kitchen.” The podcast features conversations with guests who talk about dishes and culinary experiences that connect them with their cultures and homes. Biasedly, my favorite episode is the latest one on the Indian street food Dabeli.
Audiobook: Author J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Silmarillion is now an audiobook on Audible. It is narrated by Andy Serkis, who famously plays Gollum (or Smeagol)in the Lord of the Rings movie series.
Coming up: You Feeling This?is a new podcast that launches on Tuesday, June 27. The narrative show will tell the tales of the residents of L.A., from their individual experiences to the moments they each share. Here’s the trailer.
🌊 Making Waves
The Publish Press started a series of articles spotlighting a group of creators called the YouTube New Wave. This group is rebelling against what they’re calling the “beastification of YouTube.” Their ask is to give more importance to storytelling, over traditional success metrics like retention and clickability.
Apple Podcasts has added nine new subcategories, including Mental Health, Relationships, Parenting, and Language Learning. It has also added the ability to search podcasts by language.
On June 28, Sounds Profitable is hosting a webinar sharing insights from their report titled The Podcast Opportunity: Buyer Perceptions of Podcast Advertising.
On Tubefilter, streamer joshseki talks about how to make space “for anti-toxicity” in the worlds of live-streaming and gaming.
